NASHVILLE – Tennessee Department of Transportation officials joined state and local leaders today to announce an enhancement grant of$884,742 to the city of Dyersburg for Phase II of the Dyersburg Downtown and Dyer County Courthouse Square enhancement project.

The project will continue improvements to Dyer County Courthouse and downtown Dyersburg started under Phase I of the project, which received enhancement funds in 2008. Phase II will include improvements to sidewalks and crosswalks along E. Market Street, N. Main Avenue, S. Mill Avenue, and Court Street.

“This project is an important next step in providing safe pedestrian access to the historic district of downtown Dyersburg and its area businesses,” said Governor Bredesen. “I’m pleased the state of Tennessee could help with the next phase of this effort.”

“Providing safe, accessible sidewalks in downtown Dyersburg will enhance the historic charm of the Courthouse Square and will encourage more visitors to downtown businesses,” said Representative Craig Fitzhugh. “I’m pleased to have helped secure these funds for Phase II of the Downtown and Courthouse Square project.”

Representative Judy Barker added, “Dyersburg is home to such rich history. These improvements will create an inviting atmosphere for visitors and residents to enjoy as they walk through historic downtown Dyersburg and view its historic structures, like the Dyer County Courthouse.”

“I am pleased to see Governor Bredesen and TDOT awarding a second grant for the Dyersburg Downtown and Dyer County Courthouse Square improvements,” said Senator Mark Norris. “When completed, both projects will improve access and safety in downtown Dyersburg.”

The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by TDOT.

“Through the Transportation Enhancement Grant Program, TDOT has helped fund approximately $205 million in transportation related projects,” said Nicely. “The program was established by Congress in the early 1990’s to fund activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system.”

A variety of activities such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects are eligible for grant funds under the federal program.

This project includes sidewalk, crosswalk and curb and gutter improvements along E. Market Street, N. Main Avenue, S. Mill Avenue, and Court Street. In addition, street lighting that is an exact replica of the lighting around the Dyersburg Courthouse Square during the 1920’s and 30’s will be installed along with other streetscaping improvements. The new lighting will provide a safer walking environment for pedestrians and will also showcase the historic charm of the city.
