NASHVILLE- Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance Commissioner Leslie A. Newmanwill deliver the commencement address to the recruit firefighter class at the Tennessee Fire Service and Codes Enforcement Academy at 9 a.m., Nov. 20, 2009.

As the agency’s commissioner, Newman is also the State Fire Marshal.

Shelbyville-Bedford County Chamber of Commerce CEO Walt Wood will make a presentation of a “Challenge Coin” to each of the graduating students. The Chamber supported the creation of the coin and helped with design. The coin is a show of support for the Academy. The red, white and blue coin contains the “Three Stars” logo from the Tennessee State Flag, as well as the logo of the Academy in raised, gold lettering.

The class comprises 23 students from 15 fire departments across the state and three students not currently with fire departments but preparing for careers in the fire service. The academy prepares first responders using ‘live’ simulations in a 10-week class. This approach primes recruits and presents situations they will commonly face as firefighters, training them in a variety of exercises. From victim rescue to hazardous fuel spills and a live fire, recruits are presented with a variety of life-and-death scenarios.

Represented by the recruits are Belfast Rural Fire Department, Belleville Fire Department, Columbia Fire Department, Dickson Fire Department, Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Department, Manchester Fire Department, Millersville Fire Department, Lascassas Volunteer Fire Department, Nolensville Volunteer Fire Department, Shelbyville Fire Department, Rutherford County Volunteer Fire Department, Smyrna Fire Department, Sparta Fire Department, White House Community Volunteer Fire Department and the Williamson County Rescue Squad.

Friday’s graduating class will be the 22nd to complete the Recruit Firefighter class since the facility opened in 2001. The Tennessee Fire Service and Codes Enforcement Academy offers a dual curriculum, providing nearly 500 courses to fire departments, codes professionals and other emergency response agencies throughout the state.
