State Board of Accountancy Offers Advice on Choosing an Accountant this Tax Season

Wednesday, March 04, 2009 | 09:18am

NASHVILLE- Tax season is here, and selecting the right accountant to maintain records or simply file tax returns can be even more critical for consumers and businesses amid the global economic recession.

Before hiring an accountant, you should note that not all accountants are certified public accountants (CPAs). To become a CPA, an accountant must meet criteria, including passing a state-administered exam and attending continued professional education courses.

The Tennessee Board of Accountancy offers these tips for selecting a firm, accountant or CPA that is right for you:

  • Ask about a candidate’s educational background.
  • If they are certified, ask to see a copy of their license or verify it online at the Board of Accountancy’s website, http://tn.gov/commerce/boards/tnsba/index.shtml/.
  • Ask how many clients the professional had in the past year with needs similar to yours.
  • Be sure you understand their rates and billing process before entering into an agreement.
  • Make certain you understand their procedures in the event of an audit.
  • Get referrals from your financial institution, attorney, family or friends
  • Trust your instincts and only hire someone that you are comfortable with.

The Board of Accountancy’s mission is to protect the public interest by ensuring that persons professing special competence in accountancy or those offering assurance regarding financial statement presentation have demonstrated their qualifications to do so. The board currently licenses and regulates more than 14,000 CPAs and firms operating in Tennessee.
