NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency’s first sponsored Trapping Education Class has been completed at the Johnson County Career Technical Center in Mountain City.

Thomas Boyd, an agricultural instructor who teaches the natural resources classes at Johnson County High School, included the trapping education program in the wildlife management class for the first time this semester. Boyd, who also teaches both hunter safety education and boating safety education as part of the course has always included the trapping section as part of the course’s curriculum. However, this year was the first time that students in the class could become certified in trapping education.

The students studied many areas in relation to trapping, including animal identification, trap selection, preparation and placement and processing of the fur for market. Completing the course were 21 students who passed the practical and written general knowledge exam to become certified.

“Hopefully these graduates will become motivated to continue their education by getting involved in trapping and providing their valuable services for the management of furbearers in Tennessee,” said Boyd.

Persons who are interested in trapping education courses may contact TWRA Hunter Education Coordinator Randy Huskey at (615) 837-4247 or randy.huskey@tn.gov.
