NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Education today announced the first Tennessee reading summit, “Every Student a Reader,” being held next week in Nashville for educators across the state.

The summit is aimed at bringing a focus to best practices in teaching reading across all grade levels especially as standards increase this school year through the Tennessee Diploma Project.

“Reading drives learning in all other content areas,” Education Commissioner Timothy Webb said. “It’s important now more than ever that we lay that foundation as we increase standards and curriculum for all students, across all grade levels.”

The summit will offer K-12 reading sessions with all aspects of teaching highlighted, while adding corrective, remedial and experiential sessions specifically designed to assist teachers in grades 5-9 with students who cannot read or have reading difficulties.

Each school system may have several representatives present, who can then relay training to others at their school and at the system level.
