NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen has proclaimed April 13-19 Tennessee State Natural Areas Week, and Tennesseans are encouraged to join in a weeklong celebration with activities such as wildflower hikes, guided tours and volunteer stewardship efforts.

“From the forests of the Cumberland Plateau to the peaks of the Smokies and the fertile floodplains of the Mississippi, Tennessee is blessed with some of the finest landscapes on the face of the earth,” Bredesen said. “Our State Natural Areas help ensure these special places are preserved and protected for the future. I encourage all Tennesseans to take advantage of the rich diversity found in our distinctive regions and natural areas during State Natural Areas Week and throughout the year.”

The State Natural Areas Program provides long-term protection for rare, threatened and endangered plant and animal life. The program also protects ecologically sensitive areas, areas of geological and archaeological interest and areas of great scenic beauty. First established in 1971 by the Tennessee Natural Areas Preservation Act, there are now 79 state natural areas covering more than 110,000 acres.

“Nearly four decades ago, the public realized the importance of protecting special places and generated significant support for the Natural Areas Preservation Act,” added Environment and Conservation Commissioner Jim Fyke. “Today, Tennesseans can rest assured that some of our most ecologically significant land is being protected for future generations while also available for public enjoyment.”

The week includes a full schedule of events in many of these 79 natural areas. A wide variety of interesting activities – including a canoe float and guided wildflower and birding hikes – are planned to engage Tennesseans in appreciating and enjoying these special areas.

For a complete schedule of events and trip details, please visit the State Natural Areas Web site at: www.tn.gov/environment/na/pdf/naweek2009.pdf or call (615) 532-0431. Many activities require reservations, so please call early to ensure an opportunity to participate.
