MEDIA ADVISORY: TDOS Prepares to Announce Dispatcher of the Year

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Department of Safety will be celebrating National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week by honoring one dispatcher from each of the Tennessee Highway Patrol’s eight districts as “Dispatcher of the Year.” The ceremony will be held Monday, April 13, 2009, at the Department of Safety’s Training Center.

There are 84 THP Dispatchers and Supervisors. Last year, they handled more than 340,000 calls for service. The second week of April is designated as National Public Safety Telecommunicators week and dedicated to the men and women who serve as telecommunicators, dispatchers, communication operators, radio control personnel and all others who utilize telephones, radios, computers and technical skills to provide support to law enforcement, fire services, emergency medical services and other governmental field personnel.
 

The Tennessee Department of Safety’s mission is (www.tennessee.gov/safety) to ensure the safety and general welfare of the public. The department encompasses the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Office of Homeland Security and Driver License Services. General areas of responsibility include law enforcement, safety education, motorist services and terrorism prevention.
