TDOT Announces Major Improvements to Hillsboro Road in Nashville

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner Gerald Nicely joined Nashville Mayor Karl Dean today to announce a major improvement project along Hillsboro Road (US 431/SR 106) in the heart of Green Hills. Beginning next month, TDOT will begin a resurfacing project on Hillsboro Road from Interstate 440 to Harding Place. The project will also include the addition of a center turn lane on Hillsboro Road stretching from Sharondale Drive to Crestmoor Road.

“Some of the congestion on this section of Hillsboro Road can be attributed to left turn movements that currently must be made from one of the four travel lanes,” said Commissioner Nicely. “The addition of this center turn lane will help eliminate some of the delays in this area and will make those turns much safer for drivers.”

Throughout the development of this project, TDOT has worked closely with a resource team comprised of Green Hills residents and business owners, as well as several Metro Nashville agencies, the Green Hills Action Partners, and the Chamber of Commerce West Area Business Council. All of the parties have been given opportunities to have input on the project, express concerns, and offer solutions to traffic issues along the corridor.

“I believe this turn lane will have a very positive impact on drivers’ ability to travel through Green Hills with fewer delays,” said Nashville Mayor Karl Dean. “We have also worked with TDOT to make improvements to bus stops and pedestrian crosswalks on Hillsboro Road, which will increase safety for the many pedestrians and mass transit users in the area.”

TDOT will open bids on the Hillsboro Road project on June 12th. The project could begin as early as mid-June. Work to add the center turn lane will begin first and will require lane closures over four weekends. The resurfacing work will be done during the evening and overnight hours. The entire project is expected to be complete by October 2009.

Senator Doug Henry, Representative Brenda Gilmore, and Representative Mike Stewart represent the Green Hills area in the Tennessee General Assembly.
