Governor, Department of Education Announce 2009 Governor’s Schools

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and the Tennessee Department of Education today announced the commencement of the 2009 Governor’s Schools of Tennessee.

The State of Tennessee provides twelve summer programs for gifted and talented high school students, many beginning this week. These programs offer challenging summer study experiences for college credit hosted by various state universities in various disciplines.

“These summer study programs give students a chance to experience an advanced curriculum, which is an invaluable benefit right now as we ramp up standards and curriculum across the board with the Tennessee Diploma Project,” Governor Bredesen said. “We must use every tool we have to give children the opportunity to succeed and advance in their education.”

The programs provide intense learning experiences in these disciplines, located at the following universities:

The School for the Agricultural Sciences – May 24 –June 26, 2009 –The University of Tennessee at Martin
The School for the Arts – June 7- July 10, 2009 – Middle Tennessee State University
The School for Computational Physics –May 31 - July 3, 2009 –Austin Peay State University
The School for Engineering – June 7 - July 11, 2009 –The University of Tennessee
The School for the Humanities – May 31 - July 2, 2009 –The University of Tennessee
The School for Information Technology Leadership – May 24 – June 27, 2009 –Tennessee Tech University
The School for International Studies – June 7 - July 10, 2009 – The University of Memphis
The School for Prospective Teachers – May 31 - July 2, 2009 –The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
The School for the Sciences – June 7 - July 11, 2009 –The University of Tennessee at Knoxville
The School for the Scientific Exploration of Tennessee Heritage – May 31 - July 3, 2009 –
East Tennessee State University
The School for Scientific Models and Data Analysis – May 31 - July 3, 2009 – East Tennessee State University

“Many students will be getting a head start in their chosen career field by attending a Governor’s School this summer and that’s one of our main goals while implementing the Tennessee Diploma Project,” Education Commissioner Timothy Webb said. “We want all of our students to be college and career ready.”
