Tennessee Department of Education Announces "High Schools That Work"

Monday, June 15, 2009 | 06:22am

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Education is pleased to announce 36 high schools have been awarded High Schools That Work Grants for the 2009-10 school year totaling over $200,000.

High Schools That Work is the nation’s first large-scale effort, designed by the Southern Regional Education Board, to encourage states to make career/technical education a full partner in efforts to improve student achievement while bringing together school leaders, teachers, parents and the community to improve the way all high school students are prepared for work and further education.

“It is important that we use every tool we can to ensure are students are college and career ready by the end of high school,” Education Commissioner Dr. Timothy Webb said. “By using the High Schools That Work formula we can increase the likelihood of reaching students and eventually getting them into a college or career they love.”

The grants are awarded to provide many career and technical education tools, including providing students access to intellectually challenging career/technical studies in high-demand fields, provide teams of teachers and engage students in academic and career/technical classrooms. High Schools That Work provides a framework of goals, key practices and key conditions for accelerating learning and setting higher standards.

“We need to give our students any advantage possible when it comes to competing in the job market,” said Ralph Barnett, Assistant Commissioner for Career Technical Education. “We are excited to know these school districts will be receiving additional dollars to do just that.”
