Drivers Can Line Up to be Among the First to Drive the New I-40

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation is inviting Knoxville citizens to be among the first to drive the new I-40 on June 12. TDOT will hold a “rolling road opening” as part of the grand reopening of I-40 on Friday, June 12 and is inviting the motoring public to join in on the event.

“Knoxville citizens have rerouted their lives for the last fourteen months and deserve much of the credit for the success of the SmartFIX40 project,” said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely. “It’s only fitting that they be among the first to travel the new and improved I-40 through downtown Knoxville.”

Drivers who would like to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime event and be among the first vehicles to drive on this new section of I-40 should gather at the Timothy Street Baptist Church parking lot on Knoxville Zoo Drive/Timothy Street no later than 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 12 and await further instructions from local police officials.

A large group of vehicles will assemble and then proceed with a large police escort from Rutledge Pike (Exit 392) westbound to officially open the new section of I-40 that had been closed to through traffic since May 2008.
