NC Environmental Officials to Take Tennesseans' Comments on Draft Discharge Permit Affecting Pigeon River

NEWPORT, Tenn. – The North Carolina Environmental Management Commission will visit Newport, Tennessee on January 25, 2010 to take Tennesseans’ public comments on the draft permit North Carolina is proposing to issue to Blue Ridge Paper Products, Inc., doing business as Evergreen Packaging. The proposed permit regulates the discharge of wastewater to the Pigeon River at Canton, North Carolina upstream of the Tennessee state line. 
 
The meeting will be held at Cocke County High School at 216 Headrick Drive in Newport. Registration begins at 5 p.m. and presentations will begin at 6 p.m. It is being held at the urging of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, the Tennessee General Assembly and the Cocke County Mayor’s Office to give Tennesseans an opportunity to give the state of North Carolina their comments regarding the proposed North Carolina permit.
