TDOT Region One Salt and Salt Brine Totals

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee Department of Transportation maintenance crews have used approximately 8,453 tons of granular salt and 90,850 gallons of salt brine since Thursday morning (Thursday, January 7, 2010) to make East Tennessee highways and interstates safe for motorists during the most recent snowfall and cold temperatures. Crews will work overnight tonight watching for any trouble areas and treating roads and bridges with granular salt where necessary.
 
Approximate granular salt and salt brine usage by maintenance districts:
 
- District 11 (Sullivan, Washington, Unicoi, Carter, Johnson) 
  • 1,272 tons of granular salt
 - District 12 (Hamblen, Grainger, Hancock, Hawkins) 
  • 8,020 gallons of salt brine

- District 13 (Jefferson, Greene, Cocke)

  •  574 tons of granular salt
  •  39,050 gallons of salt brine

- District 14 (Anderson, Scott, Campbell, Union, Claiborne)

  •  2,416 tons of granular salt
  •  3,030 gallons of salt brine

- District 15 (Knox, Blount, Sevier)

  • 2,200 tons of granular salt
  • 40,000 gallons of salt brine
- District 16 (Roane, Morgan, Loudon, Monroe)
  •  1,117 tons of granular salt
  •  750 gallons of salt brine
Before this week’s winter weather, TDOT’s Region One (24 East Tennessee counties) had on hand more than 53,000 tons of granular salt and over 177,000 gallons of salt brine.
 
Please Note: Most cities in East Tennessee are responsible for snow and ice removal on state routes and U.S. Highways within their boundaries.
