NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen joined TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely, Senator Jack Johnson, Representative Glen Casada, and other state and local officials in Williamson County today to mark the opening of a newly completed section of State Route 840. The new section of highway extends SR 840 from Highway 100 in Fairview to State Route 46 near Leiper’s Fork in Williamson County.

[img:4 align=float_right]“This newly completed section of State Route 840 reflects TDOT’s commitment to protect Tennessee’s environment and build road projects that enhance our communities,” said Bredesen. “It will provide new transportation options and mobility for travelers across the state and brings us a step closer to completing the entire highway.”

This SR 840 project is approximately 6 miles in length and begins just east of the Highway 100 interchange and extends to Bending Chestnut Road. It includes a new interchange at State Route 46 (Pinewood Road). It is part of the final 18 miles of roadway that travel through southwest Williamson County, and will eventually connect to the existing section of SR 840 west of Interstate 65.

“While this section of State Route 840 faced numerous challenges, it signifies many of the changes TDOT has successfully implemented,” added Commissioner Nicely. “This project led us to form valuable partnerships with this community, and improve communication and cooperation with other agencies. The lessons learned will help ensure the final two State Route 840 projects are completed on time, with no adverse impacts to the environment.”[img:5 align=float_left]

The final 12 miles of State Route 840 are under construction and will complete the 78 mile route that provides connections to I-40 east and west of Nashville, Interstates 65 and 24. The remaining section of State Route 840, which stretches from Bending Chestnut Road to State Route 6 (US 31/Columbia Pike), is expected to be open to traffic by the end of 2012.

“This new section of State Route 840 will provide countless benefits for the people who live, work, and commute in this area,” said Senator Jack Johnson. “I thank Governor Bredesen and TDOT for their efforts to bring this project and the entire route to completion.”

Representative Glen Casada added, “This project will improve access and increase economic growth potential in several Middle Tennessee communities. I’m pleased to see progress that will benefit so many of our residents.”
