Shelby County Woman Charged with TennCare Fraud

NASHVILLE – A Shelby County woman has been indicted for allegedly defrauding the TennCare program of more than $29,000.

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) today announced the arrest of Charline M. Jackson, 41, of Memphis. Her arrest was assisted by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Division.

An indictment charges Jackson with one count of theft of services over $10,000, and one  count of TennCare fraud for making a false statement in order to appear eligible for TennCare.

“Our message is clear – people who lie, cheat or steal to get TennCare benefits risk going to jail or prison,” Inspector General Deborah Y. Faulkner said. “TennCare fraud costs money from the state and ultimately, the taxpayer, and we are aggressively pursuing these crimes.”

If convicted, Jackson could be sentenced to up to six years on the charges, which are Class C and E felonies.  The Shelby County District Attorney’s office is prosecuting the case.

The OIG, which is separate from TennCare, began full operation in February 2005 and has investigated cases leading to over $2.5 million paid in restitution and recoupment to TennCare, with a total estimated cost avoidance of over $171 million for the TennCare program, according to latest figures.  To date, over 1,100 people have been charged with TennCare fraud.
