Knoxville, Tenn. – Tennessee Department of Transportation crews have closed one lane of Maynardville Highway (State Route 33) at mile marker 15.8 due to a sinkhole in the southbound lane. The sinkhole occurred shortly before 4:00 p.m. on Friday and measured two-and-a-half feet wide, three feet long and three feet deep.

TDOT crews are moving traffic into the turn lane to keep traffic moving southbound into Union County.

TDOT workers plan to fill the hole tonight and cover with asphalt on Saturday. The lane is expected to re-open on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, motorists are advised to proceed with caution and plan to take extra time for travel through the area.

Geologists will examine the sinkhole on Monday.
