Davidson Co. Woman Charged with TennCare Drug Fraud

NASHVILLE – A Davidson County woman is charged in Montgomery County with TennCare fraud for selling prescription drugs paid for by TennCare.

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) today announced the arrest of Tanya Badger, 38, after a joint investigation with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.  She is accused of using her TennCare benefits to obtain a prescription for the painkiller Oxycodone, concealing the fact that she planned to sell a portion of the pills.

“We are working with municipal and county police officers across the state, as they have know where the prescription drug problems are in their counties, and we get involved when TennCare is part of the crime,” Inspector General Deborah Y. Faulkner said. “Local police are clearly committed to eliminating prescription drug abuse, and we are doing our part to stop abusers who are attempting to support this kind of lifestyle with TennCare.”

The TennCare fraud charge against Badger could result in a two year sentence, if convicted.  District Attorney General John W. Carney is prosecuting.

The OIG, which is separate from TennCare, began full operation in February 2005 and has investigated cases leading to over $2.5 million paid in restitution and recoupment to TennCare, with a total estimated cost avoidance of over $171 million for the TennCare program, according to latest figures.  To date, over 1,100 people have been charged with TennCare fraud.
