Piggy Bank Pageant Part of Tennessee Saves Day on the Hill

NASHVILLE – They have reached their biggest moment—20 decorated piggy banks from across the state will compete in the People’s Choice State Piggy Bank Pageant on April 20, 2010 as part of Tennessee Saves Day on the Hill.

Tennessee Saves, a University of Tennessee Extension program and state affiliate of America Saves, has sponsored Tennessee Saves Day on the Hill since 2005. This event updates legislators and government staff on financial education programs available to Tennesseans through UT Extension and culminates with a State Piggy Bank Pageant.

“Tennessee Saves makes great financial literacy movement across the state. This event demonstrates the impact of their financial education efforts to Tennessee communities and most importantly to Tennessee’s youth,” Tennessee Department of Financial Institutions Commissioner Greg Gonzales said.

It has been no easy feat for the “little piggies” that have reached the final competition. More than 1,000 Tennessee students in 22 counties crafted or built saving banks. Local financial institutions across the state displayed students’ banks, and 108 local entries were sent to Nashville where judges selected 20 to be displayed at the Legislative Plaza. On April 20, legislators, plaza staff and visitors will select a people’s choice winner by popular vote.

The pageant is open to the public and voting will begin at 8 a.m.
