Landslide & Sinkhole Closes Portion of US-64 in Wayne County

NASHVILLE – US 64 in Wayne County is closed between State Route 114 and the Hardin County line due to a landslide and sinkhole that occurred following heavy weekend rains. The landslide, which was discovered at approximately 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 25, caused a 50 foot section of the eastbound travel lane of US 64 to collapse. As crews began the process of constructing a temporary travel lane on the westbound side of the roadway on Sunday afternoon, a large sinkhole was uncovered.   

 

TDOT Geotechnical personnel are on site to examine the area and determine the stability of the earth in the vicinity of the slide and the sinkhole. TDOT contract crews are also at the location and are prepared to begin repairs as soon as a course of action has been determined. The roadway will remain closed until those repairs can be made.

 

Eastbound motorists traveling from the Hardin County area will be detoured to State Route 128 East to State Route 114, which rejoins US 64. Westbound motorists traveling from the Waynesboro area will be detoured to State Route 114 West to State Route 128, which rejoins US 64. Portable message boards and detour signs are place to direct motorists around the closure.

 

A widening project is currently underway on this stretch of US 64. The project, which began in September 2008, will widen US 64 from just west of the Wayne-Hardin County line to Mill Springs Branch in Wayne County. The prime contractor on the project, Mountain States Contractors LLC, will begin immediate repairs to the roadway once a plan is finalized.
