Media Advisory: Agencies Join Together to Urge Drivers and Riders to “Share the Road”

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month & National Bicycle Month
 
NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Department of Safety is teaming up with the Governor’s Highway Safety Office, the Motorcycle Awareness Foundation of Tennessee, the XDL Championship Series, Nashville Superspeedway, the Tennessee Truckers Association, the Nashville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, and Walk/Bike Nashville to promote May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and National Bicycle Month. A “Share the Road” festival (www.sharetheroadtennessee.com) will be held Saturday, May 15, 2010, at Nashville Superspeedway in Lebanon, Tennessee. A media event is scheduled for 5 p.m. CDT.

More than 500 motorcyclists are expected to attend the festival featuring the XDL Championship series, live music, a Bike & Car Show, Bicycle Rodeo, and public motorcycle safety awareness training.  Across the country, motorcycle fatalities have steadily increased over the past decade. Last year, preliminary data indicated the number of motorcyclists killed in crashes on Tennessee roadways declined from 143 in 2008 to 120 motorcycle fatalities in 2009. The goal of the event is to remind drivers, motorcyclists and bicyclists to “Share the Road” with each other.
 

The Tennessee Department of Safety’s (www.TN.Gov/Safety) mission is to ensure the safety and general welfare of the public. The department encompasses the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Office of Homeland Security and Driver License Services. General areas of responsibility include law enforcement, safety education, motorist services and terrorism prevention.
