NASHVILLE – Tennessee Commissioner of Financial Institutions Greg Gonzales was elected secretary of the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) for 2010-2011 during the organization's 109th annual business meeting today in Boston, Mass.

Gonzales was sworn in as the 18th commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Financial Institutions on January 20, 2007 by Governor Phil Bredesen and has served in the department since 1986.

In this position, Gonzales serves as Tennessee's chief regulatory officer of all state-chartered depository and licensed nondepository financial institutions. The department supervises approximately 12,000 financial institutions and companies doing business in Tennessee. Prior to being named commissioner, Gonzales served as acting commissioner beginning in December 2005. He previously served as assistant commissioner and general counsel. In his role as assistant commissioner, he was responsible for coordinating the provision of legal advice to the commissioner and the department.

Gonzales served on the CSBS board as an at-large member and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Money Transmitter Regulators Association (MTRA), an organization of a majority of the states that regulate funds transfer companies. He also serves on the U.S. Treasury Department's Bank Secrecy Act Advisory Group.

Gonzales was born in Cookeville, Tennessee. He received a bachelor’s degree from Tennessee Technological University in 1980, and earned a law degree from the University of Tennessee in 1984.

CSBS is the nationwide organization for state bank regulation, representing the bank regulators of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. State authorities supervise approximately 6,000 state-chartered financial institutions. Further, the majority of state banking departments also oversee mortgage providers and other financial service providers. CSBS is also responsible for improving the quality of state bank supervision by providing performance evaluation and accreditation programs for the banking departments, as well as supervisory education and training programs for state personnel.
