Thursday, May 20, 2010 | 06:13am
NASHVILLE - Consumer Affairs Division Director Mary Clement and Insurance Division Consumer Insurance Services Director Vickie Trice will be among the Department officials visiting flood-response centers set up by FEMA this week.

“These visits will enable the Department to build on the weeks of phone and e-mail responses these divisions have been making to Tennesseans affected by the recent floods,” says Commerce and Insurance Commissioner Leslie A. Newman. “Our staffers will meet with FEMA managers, share information and be on hand to answer whatever questions there might be pertaining to state insurance oversight.”

Today, staffers plan to visit centers at:

  • Hartman Park Community Center in North Nashville
  • Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin
  • 100 Oaks Mall
Friday, May 21, 2010, staffers plan to visit centers at:

  • Pegram City Hall in Cheatham County
  • Franklin City Hall in Williamson County
The Department’s staffers routinely play a significant role in responding to Tennesseans’ needs after natural disasters, which are events that give rise to insurance and consumer concerns. Last year, Consumer Insurance Services set up a counseling center for insurance policyholders affected by spring tornadoes in the Murfreesboro area. In 2008, Consumer Affairs employees fielded more than 3,000 phone calls and e-mails related to price-gouging concerns after Hurricane Ike disrupted access to gasoline supplies in the Gulf Coast.
