NASHVILLE – An emergency repair contract is now in place to stabilize and repair a section of Highway 31-E near Westmoreland in Sumner County impacted by a landslide following heavy rains in the area. TDOT awarded a $1.7 million emergency repair contract to Civil Constructors on Thursday, May 20. The contractor is on site today inspecting the damage and will begin mobilizing equipment to the site this weekend.

The landslide impacted approximately 300 ft. of the northbound truck climbing lane and appears to be 20 to 30 feet deep in some sections. Traffic was shifted away from the northbound climbing lane and will be maintained in both directions throughout the repair project.

Crews with Civil Constructors will excavate the slide area, construct a rock buttress to support the embankment and then grade and pave the roadway. Work is expected to take six to eight weeks to complete. Motorists may experience some short term lane closures through the project area during non-peak travel hours, but any closures should be brief in duration.

A TDOT assessment team first discovered the approximately 300 ft. landslide on Monday, May 3 and requested a geotechnical engineer to assess the damage. Geotechnical engineers evaluated the site on May 6 and determined an emergency contract would be needed to repair the area.
