NASHVILLE – Following Tennessee’s success in the first round of the US Department of Education’s Race to the Top competition, the state will continue it’s commitment to keeping stakeholders informed about the status of Race to the Top by conducting a First to the Top Summit for local district school board members.

“Communication with school board members is going to be essential to the success of our Race to the Top plan at the local level,” said Gov. Phil Bredesen. “This will be an opportunity to discuss strategies for investing Tennessee’s estimated $501 million in federal funds for education innovation and allow school board members to ask questions and share their thoughts.”

School board members will receive an overview of Race to the Top progress and have an opportunity to discuss implementation strategies at the local and state level with the Race to the Top team, including Education Commissioner Timothy Webb and other State Department of Education officials.

The Tennessee School Boards Association and nonprofit State Collaborative on Reforming Education (SCORE) are assisting in organizing the summit.
