NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has been honored with a resolution by the Tennessee Legislature for its efforts in assisting with rescue and relief efforts during the May 2010 flood.

Rep. Mike Turner of Nashville, who is also a Metro Firefighter/EMT, introduced the resolution along with Senators Roy Herron, Joe Haynes, Andy Berke, Thelma Harper, Beverly Marrero, and Ophelia Ford to commend TWRA personnel for their meritorious service to the State of Tennessee.

The resolution stated that TWRA personnel were among the thousands of Tennesseans who have continued the time-honored tradition of volunteerism through public service, dedicating their time and efforts to aiding those in emergency situations.

During the devastating flooding, TWRA personnel performed various tasks, most of which involved the deployment of boats of various sizes at multiple locations. Many personnel were involved in search and rescue operations, however several TWRA officers were involved in law enforcement support, public health checks, assistance with handicapped rescues, pet rescues and ferrying persons from local, state, and federal agencies to strategic locations.

TWRA activities resulted in the direct rescue of 391 persons. The agency’s efforts involved 54 officers and staff utilizing 26 boats in seven counties. In the Nashville area, the tasks were accomplished by working in close coordination with the Nashville Fire Department, Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, and Nashville Office of Emergency Management.

“TWRA personnel performed their duties with the utmost skill, dedication, and professionalism,” the resolution stated. “They epitomize the spirit and commitment that characterize true Tennesseans and their service can only be categorized as outstanding.”

The resolution was adopted in June by the House of Representatives 106th General Assembly with the Tennessee Senate concurring.
