TWRA Continues Updates on WMA Planting

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is continuing to provide updates on its annual planting of crops for wildlife, including waterfowl areas in many areas of Middle and West Tennessee. The May floods have caused a delay in this year’s planting.

 

In Middle Tennessee on Cheatham Lake Wildlife Management Area, crops are expected to be planted before July 4 if drying continues and there is no significant additional rainfall. Cheatham Lake WMA consists of Dyson’s Ditch, Hudgen’s Slough, Johnson’s Creek, and Pardue Pond Refuge.  If the July 4 deadline on planting corn is not met, millet will be planted instead.

 

At Haynes Bottom WMA, corn and milo were planted the week of June 20 totaling 80 acres. The remaining blind sites are still too wet to plant corn and will be planted with millet the week of July 11. TWRA personnel have disked the pot holes once to enable them to dry quicker.

 

Many of TWRA’s WMAs suffered significant damage to levees, road and pumping systems. TWRA officials are reporting the current status of several of the sites.

 

At Old Hickory WMA, waterfowl planting has been completed. Ninety-four acres of milo have been planted at the unit.

 

The TWRA will continue to update the status of the WMAs throughout the summer.
