NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Education today is proud to announce the United States Distance Learning Association has recognized Education Commissioner Timothy Webb for outstanding leadership by an individual in the field of online technology in Pre-K through 12th-grade education.

The USDLA presented its 2010 International Distance Learning Awards in St. Louis, Missouri. The Awards were created to acknowledge major accomplishments in distance learning and to highlight those distance learning instructors, programs and professionals who have achieved and demonstrated extraordinary results through the use of online, videoconferencing, satellite and blended learning delivery technologies.

“I am proud to be honored by the USDLA and I’m committed to continuing programs like e4TN, the state’s online learning program for students, and the TN Electronic Learning Center” Commissioner Webb said. “With increased standards this year, it’s even more important we expand those types of programs and increase access for all of our students.”

Along with Commissioner Webb, Wilson County Schools teacher Barbara Hallums was recognized for excellence in distance learning teaching along with the state’s e4TN program for online technology.

“It’s important that we reach students via technology – that’s a medium they use every single day,” said Dan Long, State Executive Director of Assessment, Evaluation and Research. “I’m proud to know that our state is investing in distance learning and that our teachers are making it a priority.”
