Tuesday, August 10, 2010 | 04:59am
NASHVILLE – Even though registration for federal disaster aid for the May storms and floods has ended the assistance picture hasn’t faded to black. Federal and state government agencies aren’t powering down anytime soon.

Persons registered for assistance are strongly encouraged to remain in touch with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Call FEMA’s toll-free Helpline at 800-621-FEMA (3362) or (TTY) 800-462-7585 for the speech and hearing impaired. Staff is available every day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Questions can be answered; you can file an appeal and update information on your application.

As individuals affected by the flood move forward, resources listed below remain available.

FEMA may offer rental assistance to eligible applicants for up to 18 months following the declaration of a disaster. If a person still has need for help call FEMA’s toll-free HELPLINE at 800-621-FEMA (3362) or (TTY) 800-462-7585 for the speech and hearing impaired.

Small Business Administration (SBA) will maintain two loan outreach centers in Nashville until further notice. The center in Millington (Shelby County) will cease operation at close of business Aug. 12.

FEMA’s temporary housing assistance and grants for public transportation expenses, medical and dental expenses, and funeral and burial expenses do not require individuals to apply for an SBA loan. However, applicants who receive SBA loan applications must submit them to SBA loan officers to be eligible for assistance that covers personal property, vehicle repair or replacement, and moving and storage expenses.

Disaster recovery assistance is available without regard to race, color, religion, nationality, sex, age, disability, English proficiency or economic status. If you or someone you know has been discriminated against, call FEMA toll-free at 800-621-FEMA (3362). For TTY call 800-462-7585.
