TDOT to Reduce I-40 Bridge to One Lane in One Week

Tuesday, August 31, 2010 | 06:37am
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In just one week crews will reduce the Interstate 40 Bridge over the Mississippi River in Memphis to one lane in each direction. On September 2, 2010, TDOT representatives along with contractors performing the seismic work brief the media at the Mud Island River Park on the next two phases of work on the bridge and the traffic control plan set in place with local emergency response agencies. TDOT has worked closely with the contractor and local emergency response teams to develop a traffic plan to address any incidents during the reduction of the bridge to one lane in each direction and to ensure a safe commute for motorists. Crews must reduce the bridge to one lane in each direction in order to install a new seismic bridge joint capable of withstanding a 7.7 magnitude earthquake. The lane closures will begin September 7 and will last through mid-November.

Thursday’s event will begin at 2:00 p.m. in the Harbor Landing Room. The event will last approximately 30 minutes.
