Levee Roads Closed at Big Sandy, Camden Wildlife Management Areas

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has been notified by the Tennessee Valley Authority that the levee roads at Big Sandy and Camden wildlife management areas will be closed until further notice.

Due to ongoing repairs to the flood-damaged levees of the Camden and Big Sandy dewatering areas, TVA has closed the gates of the affected areas of levee roads on these two units to restrict vehicular traffic by the public. The action is required to protect the public and construction workers from potential vehicular traffic accidents with the construction equipment and trucks which will be running the levee roads during the construction repairs. Additionally, this will protect the survey grade stakes which have been established to ensure construction repairs are at the proper grade.

TVA anticipates that the repairs to the Camden levee will be completed in two to three weeks, barring delays due to weather. As soon as the repairs are completed at Camden, the levee roads will be re-opened to the public except during and immediately after heavy rainfall events which will make the roadways too soft to travel safely.

As soon as the Camden levee roads are repaired, the TVA crew will start repair work on the Big Sandy levee road north of Highway 69. As with the Camden levee, the Big Sandy levee road will remain closed until repairs are completed. The repairs to the Big Sandy levee road are anticipated to take three weeks, again barring adverse weather conditions. The Big Sandy levee road will be open to the public as soon as the repairs are completed except during and immediately after heavy rainfall events which will make the roadways too soft to travel safely.

TVA also has issued an apology for the inconvenience of the closures to the public. However, the work is necessary to maintain the integrity of the dewatering units’ levees and make the roads navigable to vehicular traffic by the public.
