NASHVILLE– For the third consecutive year, the Tennessee Department of Education is proud to announce that six Tennessee schools have been chosen as 2010 No Child Left Behind – Blue Ribbon Schools. The award, presented by the U.S. Department of Education, honors public and private schools whose students attain and maintain high academic goals that work towards closing achievement gaps.

“This is an outstanding accomplishment that reflects these schools going above and beyond to help our children reach their full potential and still meet federal benchmarks,” Education Commissioner Timothy Webb said. “Administrators, teachers, parents and students should be proud and deserve a round of applause for rising to the challenge.”

Tennessee’s 2010 NCLB Blue Ribbon Schools are:
  • Bethpage Elementary School, Sumner County Schools - Bill Johnson, Principal
  • Big Sandy School, Benton County Schools - Mike Bell, Principal

  • Douglass School, Memphis City Schools - Angela Brown, Principal
  • Grundy County High School, Grundy County Schools- William Childers, Principal
  • Townsend Elementary School, Blount County Schools- Kristy Brewer, Principal

The schools are selected based on one of two criteria:
  • Schools with a least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds that dramatically improve student performance to high levels on state tests; and
  • Schools whose students, regardless of background, achieve in the top 10 percent of their state on state tests or in the case of private schools, in the top 10 percent of the nation on nationally-normed tests.
