MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After numerous public meetings and hundreds of public comments, today the Tennessee Department of Transportation announced that they have selected alternate Z-1, which includes a roundabout design and avoids impacts to the French Fort neighborhood, for the Interstate 55 interchange at Crump Boulevard.

TDOT placed a high priority on selecting a design that would relieve congestion, reduce crashes and provide an uninterrupted flow of traffic between I-55 and Crump Boulevard. The current interchange is utilized by high volumes of traffic and is outdated, posing numerous safety and efficiency problems. The new design will allow I-55 traffic to flow continuously through the area. The existing cloverleaf interchange will be replaced with a roundabout which will allow universal access for all north, south, east and westbound local traffic. The new interchange will use less space than the existing cloverleaf and will require no residential or business displacements. A map of the selected interchange design is attached to this release.

“The alignment chosen for the new I-55 Interchange at Crump Boulevard is an innovative, state-of-the-art solution to a complex area of roads,” TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely said. “When complete, this new interchange will reduce congestion along this highly traveled interstate.”

Representative Barbara Cooper has been actively involved in the project and added, “This design will reduce impacts to homes and businesses in the area, particularly in the French Fort neighborhood, and will require no relocations. I’m pleased TDOT listened to the input of this community and put forth a design to serve all motorists and residents in this area of Memphis.”

The next step in the project’s development will be approval of the Final Environmental Impact Statement by the Federal Highway Administration.
