Bedford County Woman Charged with TennCare Fraud

NASHVILLE – A Bedford County woman is charged with TennCare fraud for allegedly lying to the state to obtain TennCare benefits.

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) with the assistance of the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office today announced the arrest of Lazandra Delene Teal, 28, of Shelbyville.  Teal has been charged with one count of TennCare fraud. 

Charges against Teal say she received TennCare medical assistance benefits by means of false statements and concealing material facts that would have made her ineligible for TennCare.

The TennCare fraud charge against Teal could result in a two year sentence, if convicted. District Attorney General Charles Crawford is prosecuting.

The OIG, which is separate from TennCare, began full operation in February 2005 and has investigated cases leading to over $2.5 million paid in restitution and recoupment to TennCare, with a total estimated cost avoidance of over $171 million for the TennCare program, according to latest figures.  To date, over 1,240 people have been charged with TennCare fraud.
