Nashville – The Tennessee Department of Education is proud to announce that six Tennessee schools have been chosen as 2011 No Child Left Behind – Blue Ribbon Schools. The award, presented by the U.S. Department of Education, honors public and private schools whose students attain and maintain high academic goals that work towards closing achievement gaps.

“This is an outstanding accomplishment that took effort from students, teachers, administrators and parents,” Education Commissioner Kevin Huffman said. “It is so important for us to recognize the good work that goes on in Tennessee schools and try to replicate that success.”

The schools will receive $2,500 and recognition during a ceremony in Washington, D.C. in November.

Tennessee’s 2011 NCLB Blue Ribbon Schools are:
·         Hume-Fogg High: Metro Nashville, Principal Paul Fleming (High Performing)
·         Page High: Williamson County, Principal Andrea Anthony (High Performing)
·         South Greene High: Greene County, Principal Cindy Bowman (Improving Achievement)
·         Frazier Elementary: Rhea County, Principal Gayle Kelly (Improving Achievement)

·         Morristown West High: Hamblen County, Principal Jeff Moorhouse (Improving Achievement)

Tennessee’s winners join 314 recognized schools from 48 states in receiving the coveted award.

The schools are selected based on one of two criteria:
  • Schools with a least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds that dramatically improve student performance to high levels on state tests; and
  • Schools whose students, regardless of background, achieve in the top 10 percent of their state on state tests or in the case of private schools, in the top 10 percent of the nation on standardized tests.
