Warden Named at Morgan County

WARTBURG - Commissioner Derrick Schofield has announced the appointment of John "Tony" Howerton to the position of Warden at the Morgan County Correctional Complex, effective January 9, 2012.

Warden Howerton is a 29-year correctional employee, who rose through the ranks to various leadership positions.  For the last 15 years, he has served as a Warden with the Georgia Department of Corrections and, most recently, as Warden at Phillips State Prison, an 1150-bed facility for male offenders in Buford, Georgia.

Prior to joining corrections, Warden Howerton proudly served in the United States Army with the 82nd Airborne Division.  He graduated summa cum laude with a 3.98 GPA from Colorado Technical University, obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice.  He holds a Master's degree in Public Administration from Columbus State University's Law Enforcement Command College.

Warden Howerton also served as an adjunct professor at Columbus State University and North Georgia Technical College.  He is past president of the Georgia Prison Wardens Association and the Georgia Correctional Association.
