Coast Guard Issues Boating Safety Advisements

Friday, February 25, 2011 | 08:06am
NASHVILLE --- Due to the high water at the Barkley Lock and Dam, the United States Coast Guard has issued a Safety Marine Information Broadcast to advise vessels of the dangers in the vicinity of Barkley Canal.

U.S. Corps of Engineers advises navigation traffic to use extreme caution when transiting the area around Barkley Canal on both the Tennessee River and Cumberland River.

High water conditions on the Cumberland River have caused a 1-foot slope from the Barkley Lake side toward the Kentucky Lake side of the canal. The Corps of Engineers will be increasing releases from Barkley Dam.

In addition, increased flow releases will also be in effect for the Cordell Hull, Old Hickory and Cheatham Dam units. Recreational boaters are also encouraged to use extreme caution during the next few days on the Cumberland River and the Tennessee River, especially with the potential of another rain system forecasted for Sunday and Monday.
