MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation has opened State Route 3 (U.S. 51) in Shelby County due to flooding that occurred earlier this month. Flood waters from the Loosahatchie Bottom covered an approximate one mile section of SR 3 at Fite Road, about five miles south of State Route 385. While the roadway was closed more than a week, TDOT inspected the roadway and determined it is now safe to open it to the traveling public.

Motorists traveling in the western areas of the state are encouraged to use extreme caution. Up to date road closure and travel information can be accessed by visiting www.tn.gov/tdot/tdotsmartway or dialing 5-1-1 from any land line or cell phone. Travelers can also follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/TN511 for statewide travel information or www.twitter.com/Memphis511 for traffic information in the Memphis area. Also, for smart phone users, TDOT has a new mobile site that provides simple and easy access to TDOT's SmartWay cameras, message boards, accident information, and construction information.  Go to:   http://m.tdot.tn.gov/SmartWay/

Motorists are reminded to use all motorist information tools responsibly. Drivers should refrain from texting, tweeting or using a mobile phone while operating a vehicle. TDOT advises drivers to "Know before you go!" by checking traffic conditions before leaving for their destination.
