NASHVILLE - Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam has proclaimed May 1-7, 2011 as Correctional Professionals Week in Tennessee.  The weeklong observance recognizes the contributions of more than 5,000 TDOC employees who work to enhance public safety and operate safe and secure prisons.

More than 5,000 men and women work in state correctional facilities in various positions including officers, teachers, counselors and food service employees.

In issuing the proclamation, Governor Haslam said the State of Tennessee and the Department of Correction are proud to honor the daily work of the men and women who are required to co-exist, work and protect inmates from violence while encouraging them to develop skills and attitudes to become productive, responsible members of society.

Commissioner Derrick Schofield told his staff, "The Governor's proclamation clearly sends the message you are a valued part of the law enforcement community.  Becoming a correctional professional is a choice you have all made.  You answered the call to serve our fellow citizens in a tremendous fashion.  I am often reminded by you, the work you do, is a privilege and a responsibility you take seriously and is a critical part of what makes Tennessee a great and safer state."
