NASHVILLE --- Two men are facing charges after the Tennessee Highway Patrol discovered drugs and U.S. currency during a traffic stop in Putnam County on Friday, June 10.

Trooper Matilda Mahaney, a part-time Interdiction Plus (IP) team member, clocked a 2006 Chevrolet Impala doing 83 in a 55 mile-per-hour speed zone on Highway 111 southbound near the one mile marker at approximately 1:55 p.m. last Friday. After stopping the New York registered vehicle, Mahaney discovered that the two occupants were enroute to Bonnaroo in Manchester. The driver was identified as Alberto R. Almonte, 40, of the Bronx, N.Y.

After the passenger, who has yet to be positively identified, displayed suspicious behavior, Trooper Mahaney requested the assistance of Interdiction Plus Team Leader Michael Loftis. Trooper Loftis deployed his drug K-9 and received a positive response for the presence of illegal drugs. Subsequent investigation led to the discovery of a nitrous oxide tank – a Class A felony - in the trunk and 1,000 balloons in the backseat.

As the search continued, a hidden compartment was found in the passenger side dashboard. At that point, the passenger fled on foot and was quickly captured by Troopers Loftis and Mahaney. Both subjects were then taken into custody. With the help of IP Team Member Trooper Michael Roberston, the Troopers were able to open the electronic compartment, where they found over a pound of cocaine, 1,000 ecstasy tablets, an ounce of marijuana and $2,000 in U.S. currency. The estimated street value of the seized drugs was $43,000.

Mr. Almonte was cited for speeding and charged with possession of schedule I, II, III and VI controlled substance with intent to manufacture, sale or deliver, and possession of drug paraphenilia. His bond is listed at $1 million. The passenger, who has given investigators two names, has warrants out for resisting arrest and the possession of schedule I, II, III and VI controlled substance with intent to manufacture, sale or deliver, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He will be charged after positive identification has been made.

Photos of the suspects can be obtained from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department.

The vehicle was seized in accordance with state law.
