2011 Elk Hunt Winners Announcement Among Items on June TWRC Agenda

Tuesday, June 14, 2011 | 02:55am
NASHVILLE --- The four winners selected to participate in Tennessee’s third managed elk hunt will be announced during the June meeting of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Commission on Friday, June 17.

This month’s meeting will be held on one day rather than the regular two-day format. The June meeting will begin at 9 a.m. in the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency Region II Ray Bell Office Building and is open to the public.

The four winners of the 2011 elk hunt permits were selected in a random drawing. The fifth participant will be the recipient of a permit that is donated to a Non-Governmental Organization, which this year was the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Foundation. That permit will be auctioned on eBay. The auction period will run July 14-23. Fund-raising proceeds are designated for the TWRA Elk Program.

The five participants will be contacted and provided information relating to the hunt. The hunt is scheduled Oct. 17-21 at the North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area.

The Wildlife and Forestry Division will provide the commission an overview of major changes that are coming in the area of big game check in. The Wildlife and Forestry Division will also provide the commission with new language that would allow for land purchases to take place without necessitating a proclamation change. Small tracts of land are sometimes purchased adjacent to Wildlife Management Areas when they become available, especially in West Tennessee.

The Boating Division will present the statewide work efforts made by boating safety during the 2011 Memorial Day holiday weekend. There were no boating fatalities recorded during the holiday period.

The Law Enforcement Division will present an overview of the efforts of TWRA wildlife officers in response to the tornadoes in East Tennessee and the flooding in West Tennessee this spring.
