Nashville, Tenn. – Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner John Schroer joined state and local officials in Bedford County today to celebrate the completion of the new Shelbyville Bypass (State Route 437). The $14.8 million project creates a new transportation corridor on the east side of Shelbyville, and provides connection from US 41/State Route 16 to Highway 231.

“Projects like this are vital to the mobility and economic development in Tennessee’s rural areas,” said Commissioner Schroer. “The completion of this project marks major progress in TDOT’s efforts to increase access and capacity in this growing region and provide an alternate route for commercial traffic.”

Senator Jim Tracy, who was instrumental in the development of this project, joined Commissioner Schroer at today’s opening event.

“This is an important investment in Bedford County’s transportation system and its economic future,” said Senator Tracy. “I want to thank TDOT for working closely with me to prioritize a project that will serve the citizens of this area for decades to come.”

Representative Pat Marsh added, “This project will improve traffic flow here in Shelbyville and provide motorists with an alternate route to Highway 41 and 231. I’m pleased the state could make this investment in Bedford County.”

The Shelbyville Bypass was developed in order to provide improved access to industrial developments within Bedford County and an alternate route for commercial traffic that would otherwise travel through downtown Shelbyville. The project, which began in July of 2009, was funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
