NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and TDOT Commissioner John Schroer are pleased to announce the award of a $418,200 transportation enhancement grant to the city of Erin for Phase III of the Town Square Beautification Project.

Phase III of the Town Square Beautification Project will continue to define the area’s downtown corridor from north to south, between the Houston County Courthouse through the town square moving toward the Betsy Ligon Park entrance. The project includes the construction of more than 800 linear feet of sidewalk and pedestrian lighting.

“This project will greatly enhance the ease of pedestrian mobility in Erin’s town center,” Governor Haslam said. “It is also a major step in the city’s efforts to revitalize its downtown and create a welcoming environment for residents, visitors, and potential businesses.”

The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

“Through Transportation Enhancement grants, TDOT has funded more than $259 million in non-traditional transportation projects,” said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer. “Established by Congress in the early 1990’s, the program supports activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system.”

A variety of activities such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects are eligible for grant funds under the federal program.

Senator Tim Barnes and Representative John Charles Tidwell represent Houston County in the Tennessee General Assembly.
