NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and TDOT Commissioner John Schroer are pleased to announce the award of a $352,052 transportation enhancement grant to the town of Camden for Phase III of the Downtown Improvements Project.

Phase III of the Downtown Improvements Project includes the construction and reconstruction of sidewalks along East Main Street, Church Street, Forrest Avenue and East Lake. New decorative lighting and landscaping will also be installed in the project area. The improvements are designed to enhance the character of downtown Camden while creating a more pedestrian oriented environment.

“Revitalization projects like this enhance the lives of citizens and promote economic growth in our towns and cities,” said Governor Haslam. “I am pleased the state of Tennessee can help implement this new vision for Downtown Camden.”

The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

“Through Transportation Enhancement grants, TDOT has funded more than $259 million in non-traditional transportation projects,” said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer.  “Established by Congress in the early 1990s, the program supports activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system.”

A variety of activities such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects are eligible for grant funds under the federal program.

Representative Tim Wirgau and Senator Roy Herron represent Benton County in the Tennessee General Assembly.
