Grant to Fund Spring Street Pedestrian Project Phase II

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and TDOT Commissioner John Schroer are pleased to announce the award of a $596,056 transportation enhancement grant to the city of Pikeville for Phase II of the Spring Street Pedestrian Project.

Phase II of the Spring Street Pedestrian Project includes the construction of approximately 1600 linear feet of sidewalk between Grove Street and Wheeler Avenue. The project also includes landscaping, new decorative pedestrian lighting, and signage. The purpose of the project is to provide pedestrians a safe route between the historic Main Street Commercial District and the businesses on Spring Street and East Railroad Avenue.

“This project complements the other improvements Pikeville has made to its downtown district,” Governor Haslam said. “When complete, this project will provide safer transportation alternatives that will increase the sense of community and draw new visitors to the area each year. I am pleased the state is helping with these important improvements.”

The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

“Through Transportation Enhancement grants, TDOT has funded more than $259 million in non-traditional transportation projects,” said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer. “Established by Congress in the early 1990’s, the program supports activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system.”

A variety of activities such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects are eligible for grant funds under the federal program.

Representative Cameron Sexton and Senator Eric Stewart represent Bledsoe County in the Tennessee General Assembly.
