Grant to Fund Pedestrian Bicycle Project

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and TDOT Commissioner John Schroer are pleased to announce the award of a $261,541 transportation enhancement grant to the town of Decatur for the Pedestrian Bicycle Project.

The Decatur Pedestrian Bicycle Project includes construction of a ten foot wide trail along School Drive and River Road, ending at the main shopping center. The project also features a retaining wall and drainage improvements. The project will link residential areas to the main commercial shopping areas as well as government services.

“The City of Decatur is working hard to provide citizens and visitors a chance to walk in a safer and more accessible environment,” Governor Haslam said. “It is a project that both Meigs County residents and visitors can enjoy. I’m proud the state can make investments like this to enhance local communities.”

The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

“Through Transportation Enhancement grants, TDOT has funded more than $259 million in non-traditional transportation projects,” said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer. “Established by Congress in the early 1990’s, the program supports activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system.”

A variety of activities such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects are eligible for grant funds under the federal program.

Senator Mike Bell and Representative Eric Watson represent Meigs County in the Tennessee General Assembly.
