Nashville, TN –The Tennessee Department of Transportation Governor’s Highway Safety Office announced the winners of the 7th Annual Law Enforcement Challenge at an event on Friday, September 9. This year’s winners included not only state awards but also, 11 national awards. The Law Enforcement Challenge is presented to law enforcement agencies statewide by the Governor’s Highway Safety Office.
“From child passenger safety to impaired driving campaigns, police agencies across Tennessee utilize a wide variety of programs to increase safety in their communities,” said Governor Bill Haslam. “Their dedication saves countless lives each year and certainly deserves this recognition both by the state and nation.”
A total of fifty-four awards were presented during a ceremony Friday, September 9. Nationally, Tennessee agencies won eleven awards including five top honors. Regardless of type or size, all of the agencies that applied were considered for these awards.
“The National Law Enforcement Challenge honors the good work of our law enforcement agencies,” said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer. “It also provides an incentive for law enforcement agencies to reach new heights, set comprehensive goals, and to share their experiences. These enforcement and education efforts help keep our roads safe and help nurture better drivers.”
The Law Enforcement Challenge is an annual competition designed to recognize and reward the best overall traffic safety programs across the state and across the country as judged by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). Similar sizes and types of agencies are judged on their local efforts to enforce laws and educate the public about the dangers of driving impaired and speeding as well as the importance of occupant protection. The winning safety programs combined officer training, public information and enforcement to reduce crashes and injuries within their jurisdictions.
GHSO Director Kendell Poole reminded the group of law enforcement representatives that all attending are winners, “Lives are saved every day by law enforcement officers who work to reduce the frequency and severity of injuries on our roadways in Tennessee. The awards presented illustrate not only the achievements made in highway safety but our appreciation for their work.”
A list of state and national winners is attached to this release.
