Grant to fund Downtown Revitalization Project

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) Commissioner John Schroer announced today a $500,000 transportation enhancement grant to Lawrenceburg for downtown revitalization.

The second phase of the Downtown Revitalization Project in Lawrenceburg is focused on improving pedestrian and vehicular traffic patterns on and around the city’s historic square district.

The improvements include resurfacing and re-striping of approximately 80,000 feet of asphalt within the square itself and approaching roadways as well as installation of concrete islands at the four intersections of the square. More than 12,000 linear feet of concrete sidewalks will also be replaced along with new landscaping, benches, bicycle racks and waste receptacles.

“The historic town squares we have across the state are an important piece of Tennessee’s character by offering a place for the community to gather as well as providing a hometown feel for visitors,” Haslam said. “The project will provide increased and safer mobility and make it a great location for Tennesseans and visitors to enjoy.”

The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

“Through Transportation Enhancement grants, TDOT has funded more than $259 million in non-traditional transportation projects,” said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer. “Established by Congress in the early 1990’s, the program supports activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system.”

A variety of activities such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects are eligible for grant funds under the federal program.

State Sen. Jim Summerville (R-Dixon) and state Rep. Joey Hensley (R-Hohenwald) represent Lawrence County in the Tennessee General Assembly.
