KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) Commissioner John Schroer announced today the award of a $277,640 transportation enhancement grant to Campbell County for the Trailhead and Courthouse Area Improvement Project.

The Trailhead and Courthouse Area Improvement Project includes the construction of a trail along parts of Paris Nance Road and Valley Street, as well as trailhead access. New pedestrian lighting will also be installed around the courthouse, along with underground utilities.

“This project continues Campbell County’s efforts to provide citizens and visitors a chance to walk in a safer and more accessible environment around the courthouse” Haslam said. “Around the state projects such as this are improving the quality of life and providing Tennesseans with more opportunities to walk and be healthy.”

The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

“Through Transportation Enhancement grants, TDOT has funded more than $259 million in non-traditional transportation projects,” said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer. “Established by Congress in the early 1990’s, the program supports activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system.”

A variety of activities such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects are eligible for grant funds under the federal program.

State Senator Ken Yager (R-Harriman) and State Representative Dennis Powers (R-Jacksboro) represent Campbell County in the Tennessee General Assembly.
