Firefighting Academy to Honor Fallen State, 9/11 Personnel

Thursday, September 08, 2011 | 11:10am
NASHVILLE- Firefighters lost in the line of duty in Tennessee, along with those lost during the 9/11 tragedy, will be honored at the Tennessee Fire Service and Codes Enforcement Academy at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10.

To honor all fallen firefighters in Tennessee, a bronze statue of a firefighter will be unveiled in the center of the Fallen Firefighter Memorial. In addition, a bronze beam from the World Trade Center will be unveiled to honor the 343 firefighters lost in the 9/11 terror attacks.

During the ceremony, the names of two Tennessee firefighters will be added to the Fallen Firefighter Memorial. Buford Delwin Lee, of the Marshall County Emergency Management, and Jimmy Tuberville, of the Milledgeville Volunteer Fire Department, were lost in the line of duty in 2010.

Commerce and Insurance Deputy Commissioner Steven Majchrzak will deliver remarks at the event. “At Commerce and Insurance – which includes the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s office – we cherish our ongoing efforts to train firefighters and to honor those who nobly give their lives in the line of duty,” said Majchrzak.

Saturday’s memorial is part of the “Everyone Goes Home” weekend at the academy. During the weekend, the academy will offer safety classes to firefighters, designed to prevent any more names from being added to the fallen firefighters list.

Founded in 2002, the Tennessee Fallen Firefighter Memorial (TFFM) Committee comprises individuals from the various fire service organizations across Tennessee: Tennessee Fire Chiefs Association, Tennessee Fireman’s Association, Tennessee Fire Service and Codes Enforcement Academy, the Tennessee Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators, Tennessee Federation of Fire Chaplains and the Tennessee Professional Firefighters Association.
