Labor Grant Contributes to Scott County Economic Development

NASHVILLE – Scott County will receive a $15,000 grant from the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development to help with start-up assets for establishing the new Office of Economic and Industrial Development for Scott County, TDLWD Commissioner Karla Davis announced today. The grant was secured in cooperation with local government officials, State Senator Ken Yager (R-Harriman) and Representative Kelly Keisling (R-Byrdstown).
“We are pleased to be able to provide assistance to Scott County’s efforts to build capacity for work opportunities,” said Commissioner Davis. “This job-driven project is good news for workers in Scott County.”
The Scott County unemployment rate for July 2011 was 19.8 percent, marking the 17th consecutive month Scott County has held the highest county unemployment rate in Tennessee.
“We appreciate Governor Haslam and Commissioner Davis for securing this grant, and applaud Mayor Tibbals and other county officials for including this office in their economic development efforts,” said Senator Yager. “I also appreciate the support of Representative Keisling. We have many challenges as we work to create jobs in a very difficult economic climate; however, this is a big step in the right direction.”
The Office of Economic and Industrial Development is projected to have an annual budget of $160,000. More than $300,000 has been raised to fund the project for the first three years.

We all know Scott County has been hit especially hard in this economy and I am so thankful our Governor and Commissioner are committed to helping our county recover.” added Rep. Keisling. “Senator Yager and I are going to continue working hard to let everyone know that Scott County is open for business and has a strong workforce ready and willing to get to work.”
The $15,000 Labor and Workforce Development grant is non-recurring funding. The funds must be expended by June 30, 2012.
The grant will be used in the initial establishment of the office for purchasing a computer, a copier printer with high-quality performance capability for printing company-specific publications, and other office tools needed to attract and promote industry in Scott County.
